Hi! I have recently joined my local Greenpeace group and spent a couple of hours yesterday making a banner for the current campaign against deep sea mining:
Deep Sea Mining is a very serious issue, where large corporations (including BMW, Volva, Samsung and Google) send boats to drill down into the sea bed in very deep parts of the ocean. They extract mineral deposits, at the same time harming the fragile ecosystems and disturbing wildlife which is still relatively undiscovered. As well as this, it is possible that Deep Sea Mining might make climate change even worse by releasing carbon dioxide that is stored in the sea bed. And even though the deep sea mining industry has identified that there are significant environmental concerns within its practices, it still carries on.
What has Greenpeace been doing about it?
Greenpeace has staged peaceful protests to try and push the companies into stopping. These have included many people from islands in the Pacific such as Fiji, who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods.
What can we as individuals do?
These days it is very easy to make a difference- you could sign a petition, write to the companies, call them out on social media, or even get involved with your local group for more organised action. Personally, I (along with my sister) will be taking a picture of myself with the banner and my local group will be using it to help press these companies. Remember, no one is too small to make a difference!
