Hi! Following on from my previous post about Chaffinches, today I will be talking about their cousin, the Greenfinch (carduelis chloris)*. This is another bird which I don't think I have ever seen in my local area; but which I have included because it is a common garden visitor.
The Greenfinch is sparrow-sized and quite chunky, with a heavy bill and a very mellow, twittering twi-twi-twi call. This bird has a loud, nasal song, which is sometimes interspersed with their call: a de'weez, often given in flight. The Male is greenish but has a helpful flash of yellow under its wings and tail. The female, however, is browner and almost grey in some places.
I hope you have found this helpful, please comment if you have any more suggestions for some posts or other garden birds! 😊
*You may notice that the Latin names, which are the ones used by scientists, start in a similar way in families. For example, the Greenfinch (carduelis chloris) has the same beginning as the Goldfinch (carduelis carduelis) and the Siskin (carduelis spinus).
