GARDEN BIRDS 5 (and 6)- THE SPARROW

Hello! I have a little bit of time before school starts to squeeze in this post, so here we go! But before I start, goldfinches are a garden bird so if you want to read my previous post about them, click here!

Now, today I am going to be talking about...

The house sparrow, or passer domesticus, is one of the most characteristic garden birds. They are not shy at all, and I'm sorry to say that when they wake you up with their screeching three days in a row a 5 in the morning, they do become a little annoying! I have also mentioned sparrows before, but only briefly so I wanted to do a proper post.

The male is very obvious (to the right on the photo above|); but the female (on the left) can be confused with a dunnock, a female chaffinch (coming tomorrow!) or the rarer tree sparrow. Despite the huge flocks near my house they have declined in recent years and sadly are now on the conservation red list!

The sparrow is never far from human habitation and has adapted perfectly for our cities. It will frequently nest in buildings or infrastructure. Sparrows are smaller than a blackbird but bigger than the tit family.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed it. Bye! 👋
