Hi! Today I am going to be talking about the Chaffinch, or Fringilla coelebs. I really want to attract one of these colourful birds to my garden because they are just beautiful. Sadly, I have not yet succeeded in attracting them; but I do enjoy watching them in my local park.
The male (left) and female (right) chaffinch are quite different. The male has a distinctive red face and breast with darker wings and a grey nape; whereas the female is duller and brown, rather like a female house sparrow.
The chaffinch's call is vigorously repeated and is almost identical each time you hear it: a descending scale of notes ending with a loud flourish- my bird book describes it as a tink-tink-tink-chink-chink-chink-dink-dink-tiddle-you-wee-o!
Hope you have enjoyed reading this, see you next time!
