GREEN HEARTS AND GARDEN BIRDS

Hi! Before I get into the main part of this post (garden birds) I would like to take a moment to mention the Climate Coalition's campaign called Show The Love. It runs all through February and any one can take part. It is so simple! Just wear a green heart in February (but particularly Valentines weekend) to show your love for nature. Me and my sister have been making them for friends and family. What we have done is cut out a green felt heart and sew onto it a silhouette of an animal! Please check out their website and get involved! 💚💚💚

Now, onto the post! I wanted to talk about garden birds, because this weekend is the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch! I have done it and spotted two blackbirds, a great tit, a blue tit, two woodpigeons and one feral pigeon. Even if you don't have a garden, don't worry, this can be done from your window or local park!

But what if you don't have many birds in your garden? Here are my top tips for attracting different species:

1. Food- the obvious one. Now is the time when birds need the most food and when it is the hardest to find. You can buy a bird feeder and some feed (seeds, nuts and mealworms are all popular, but make sure you do some research into particular species). If you don't want to buy, check out the RSPB's website for some ways to make your own using only a yoghurt pot, some string, lard, cheese, peanuts and raisins!

2. Water. It may sound obvious, but birds need to drink! Depending on where you live, the birds' natural water supply may be frozen and they will probably appreciate a dish of water on the ground!

3. Make sure the feeders are placed somewhere where the birds can fly into foliage if there are any dangers. Next to a tree or bush is good; but make sure it is somewhere out of the squirrels' reach!

4. Keep the cats away! Sorry if you are a cat lover, but no bird is going to enjoy visiting a garden that is prowled by a hungry cat!

5. Make sure all birds can enjoy your garden- as well as having feeders up high, a dish of seeds on the ground may well draw in blackbirds, robins and the shyer dunnock!

I hope you have enjoyed reading this and good luck with the birds! Please check out the links and wear a green heart as well!
