Hi! Today, I am going to tell you about a project that I have been doing over half term- making a miniature nature pond.
If you don't have a garden, you could see if you could make one in a community garden or somewhere similar. And if you are lucky enough, like me, to have a garden, it doesn't have to be massive- mine is paved and small but nevertheless a home for wildlife.
STEP 1)
Find a container to make your pond in- I used an old sink, but a plastic tub would work as well. Then, find somewhere to put it. Preferably it should be sunk in the ground to make it easier for creatures to get in and out; but don't worry if you can't. You would need a bulldozer to dig down any more than a few centimeters in my garden, so instead I put it in a step by a door that we never open.STEP 2) Next, make sure your container is clean. (This is where my one went really wrong- our hose had broken when the water froze in it last week so when I turned it on I got drenched in icy water from the holes. Then I couldn't turn it off for about five minutes and by that time the garden was a lot wetter than before). Anyway, clean it out and then place around it some plants and/or bricks to allow better access and make it look natural.
STEP 3) Now, you should line your container with gravel or other small stones, as well as adding any aquatic plants or pieces of wood so animals can get out. Don't worry if the gravel is muddy or dirty- that is the case for most natural ponds as well!
STEP 4)
This is the most exciting part- and the last step! Time to fill your pond with water. Make sure you check your hose hasn't exploded first though!!!! Don't worry if the water is murky like in the picture, it will clear in a couple of weeks.
I hope you have enjoyed reading and good luck with any visitors to your pond. If you have made one, please comment and let me know! If you need more advice, I got this idea from the Wildlife Trust website. Byee!!
