Happy New Year! It's finally 2022, hopefully the year when we start to get back to normal. 😅 The picture above is of an Artist's Bracket mushroom, which you can draw on using a stick. Now, for some tips to deal with the post-Christmas waste!
1. Making an insect hotel out of branches from your Christmas tree:
1. Collect branches from your Christmas tree, they can be any size.
2. Tie them in bunches using string that will biodegrade.
3. Place in a container if you wish.
4. Optional- add bricks, bamboo or leaves.
And there you have a super-simple bug hotel!
2. Making tags from old Christmas cards:
This one is probably the simplest- instead of throwing out your Christmas cards, just keep some of them and next year cut out the design to use as tags on presents.
3. Dealing with leftovers:
I know I've said this before, but food waste is such a huge issue, especially around Christmas. So try making pies with leftover food from Christmas dinner and experiment with new recipes. You could also donate some food to foodbanks or compost any leftovers that you can't eat/donate.
4. Recycling unwanted gifts/decorations
If there are any decorations or gifts that you don't want, instead of throwing them away you could either donate them to a local charity sop or sell them online. Good sites are Depop and Ebay.
5. Disposing of your Christmas Tree
There are lots of different sustainable ways to dispose of your Christmas tree. Many charities now run recycling schemes where they collect your tree in exchange for a donation. Search 'christmas tree recycling scheme for charity' to see if there are any near you. Another option is putting it in your green waste bin, where it will be used in different ways and made into compost. Lastly, some councils run a scheme where they turn your tree into wood chippings for local parks. Check your local authority website to see if they are running one or check out the Recycle Now page.
I hope you enjoyed these tips and are having a great new year! Ayla :)
