GARDEN BIRDS 1- THE ROBIN

Hi! As you probably will have noticed, I have changed the theme and layout of my blog! You can now see my profile, an archive to find my posts and contact me in the contact form, as well as following and subscribing!

I haven't focused on an animal in a while so I thought I would do that, but instead of just one animal I am going to give a list of birds you might see in your garden, one every couple of days. Obviously this will differ depending on where you live; however, if you live in the UK you should see most of these birds! Today I am going to start with that winter favourite, the robin!

The robin, or
Erithacus rubecula to give it it's correct name, is that typical Christmas card bird. It is relatively easy to identify; but a flash of brown in the trees could suggest a dunnock instead.

The robin, though typically associated with winter, sings all year round with beautiful, melodic tunes where no two verses are the same. The alarm call of the robin can vary from a low hiss to a sharp 'tsee'. They are found almost anywhere with vegetation in the UK and are, of course, common- no declines in the population of this most favoured bird!

Robins will visit a garden but they won't go on feeders as often as a Blue Tit would, for example. Instead, they will prefer to feed on seeds/nuts/mealworms left on the ground or on a bird table. I recently made some fat balls in yoghurt pots but the string of one of them broke so I left it balanced in our apple tree, not expecting any visitors but not wanting to waste it either. A few days later and a robin would visit all the time, taking beakfuls of the stuff.

I hope you have enjoyed learning about the robin, see you tomorrow! :)

  1. Great post Ayla :D I really enjoyed reading it! The robin is definitely my 2nd favourite bird (after the peregrine falcon, of course!) and I've seen loads of them in Peckham rye, especially in the bushes near one particular bench •o• there have been loads of blue tits in our garden recently - they like to hide in the rose bush that grows up our garden wall. :D Can you do a blue tit post please?!
