A SHOCKING DISCOVERY!

Hi! I'm sure most of you, like me, enjoy a sweet treat every now and again; but I have discovered something that is making me think twice about my decisions:

One of the things I use a lot in baking is golden syrup, and the brand I buy is Tate&Lyle. However, the information that has come to light means I have to find somewhere else to stock up on sticky substances.

The company Tate&Lyle have donated to the Conservative party and are a proud supporter of Brexit. But does their Pro-Leave position come from a position of political opinion or economic gain?

As an article in the Guardian has reported, Greenpeace have discovered that Tate&Lyle are set to save  a shocking £79 million due to a Brexit policy coming in to place at the end of this year. It allows any companies to import raw sugar cane (used to make syrup) from anywhere in the world tariff-free. Tariff is a government-imposed tax on goods being imported from elsewhere in the world.

However, the only country actually importing raw sugar cane is... Tate&Lyle!!!

Also, the fact that tariffs are no longer in place makes it much easier for companies to import cheaper items from countries which use wildlife-harming pesticides that are illegal in the UK. Tate&Lyle deny planning to use this advantage to buy cheap sugar cane, instead saying, “In Australia and Brazil, which are two countries we’d love to buy more from, they have the highest numbers of sugar producers who are certified for the highest ethical environmental standards in the world.

But where else can we buy golden syrup and treacle from? I have done a small bit of research and Steenburg make fair trade organic syrup. If any of you know of any other brands or just have any eco tips, please feel free to comment below!

👋 Byeeee!
