Our fast fashion culture (where we wear clothes for a short time and through them away for no good reason) means that the fashion industry is the world's second largest polluter! So, what can you do to stop this? Well, here's a list of sustainable brands to try out. By the way, I haven't actually used these brands and this information comes entirely from my own research.
But sometimes buying isn't the solution - it's the problem! before you go to buy any new clothes, ask yourself: do I really need this? Could you mend some old clothes? This is actually a new look, check out this website on visible mending. If you really need to buy something, why not visit a charity shop.
Only after you are sure that none of the above options meets your needs do you visit one of the links below:
1) Eco Outfitters is a school uniform brand that uses organic cotton to make their products. This means they don't contain any synthetic fertilizers or harmful pesticides.
2) Eternal Creation is a fair-trade brand for 4-14 year old's, who also sell accessories.
3) Tentree is an ethical clothing brand that also plants trees.
4) Alternative Apparel is a company that makes clothes for kids upwards. They also use recycled cotton.
5) Thread4thought is a company that makes clothes for ages 2-14, who uses organic cotton and recycled polyester and nylon made from plastic bottles and fishing nets!
Now, you've learnt about some new brands. But what about the familiar faces? I've selected a few of these and dug a little deeper into their sustainability.
1) M&S: all their cotton is sustainably sourced; but what about their non-cotton products?
2) Boden: they're a member of the ethical trade unit and they use sustainable packaging 'when they can'. What does that mean?
3) H&M: say they have signed a UN global contract; but a signature isn't that much: what are they actually doing?
Well, that's all for now. I hope next time you go shopping you will think back to this post. See you next time! 👚👋
Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Eternal Creation has closed down and you can no longer buy from them. The other brands are still open, though. Happy New Year!
